Corolla propels Toyota to best sales in five years

Mar 4, 2015 .

Toyota has recorded its strongest new-year sales performance in five years after posting two consecutive months of year-on-year increases buoyed by healthy demand for Corolla.

The long-term market leader delivered 29,904 new vehicles during January and February as customers presented Toyota with its best start to a year since 2010.

Toyota?s February sales were also its highest for the shortest month since 2010 at 16,243 vehicles ? a gain of 18.9 per cent compared with January this year and an improvement of 0.3 per cent over February last year.

Corolla ? Australia?s top-selling car for the past two years ? was the most popular car last month with 3,939 sales, a gain of 18.2 per cent on February last year.

Toyota has also extended its cumulative sales lead over its nearest rival to 11,841 vehicles so far in 2015 ? the second-biggest gap it has ever recorded for the first two months of the year.

Only the opening 60 days of 2008 (a leap year) produced a bigger winning margin for Toyota when strong sales across the industry were spurred by an economy still reaping the benefits of the mining boom.

Official figures for February show HiLux was ranked third on the national sales chart with 2,861 deliveries ? more than 44 per cent ahead of its closest competitor.

Other Toyota vehicles to lead their respective market segments for the month were Camry, LandCruiser wagon, HiAce van and HiAce bus.

Toyota Australia?s divisional manger national marketing Brad Cramb said the company was focused on implementing far-reaching initiatives that would build on its position as the established market leader.

?The 2015 sales figures show Toyota has an even firmer grip on its long-term position as the best-selling automotive brand in the country,? Mr Cramb said.

?Our ability to widen the overall sales margin has been achieved in the face of increased competition from a growing number of brands and a proliferation of new models, many of which are directly targeted at Toyota,? he said.

?We remain focused on improving the choice available to customers by enhancing the technology, innovation and excitement of Toyota vehicles, including a hectic launch period for new and upgraded models over the next 12 months.

?Toyota dealers and our staff are also keenly focused on long-term success by continuing to improve the overall ownership experience for our customers, many of whom have shown remarkable loyalty to the Toyota brand.?

Toyota has been the overall market leader for 18 of the past 24 years ? 1991?94, 1998, 2000 and every year since 2003.
