** Corolla and HiLux top October sales **
Toyota has embraced local Cup fever by producing a quinella of its own with stablemates Corolla and HiLux racing to the front as the nations two best-selling vehicles in October.
Corolla was first past the post for the seventh month this year, backed by more than 3,800 customers whose support enabled the popular car to street the field and strengthen its grasp on the title of Australias best-selling car in 2014.
The HiLux workhorse gave its stablemate a run for its money, eventually claiming the runner-up slot by posting more than 3,200 sales for the month.
Toyotas two front-runners have solid quinella-winning form with October being the third time this year the duo has achieved the 1-2 in national sales, following similar results in May and June.
Their sales performance led the way as Australian motorists bought 17,382 Toyota vehicles for the month – more than 1,400 sales clear of the combined totals of the numbers two and three brands.
Toyotas executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the companys strong sales results – including an October market share above 19 per cent – underpinned an industry that was performing at near-record levels.
Healthy underlying demand and sharp retail offers through November and December will keep the total industry on track for a 2014 total of 1.1 million sales for only the third year in history, Mr Cramb said.
So far this year, Toyota dealers have delivered more than 168,400 vehicles, building an unassailable lead of 78,000 vehicles over the number two automotive brand.
Moving into the home stretch to December 31, Toyota is now odds-on to race to its 12th consecutive year as the best-selling automotive brand in Australia.
Corollas October achievement has lifted its 2014 tally above 36,900 sales, giving it an overall lead of more than 900 cars in the quest to be Australias best-selling vehicle for the second year in a row.
Toyota also has a stranglehold on two other long-term titles – moving to its 36th straight year at the top of commercial-vehicle sales and a 21st consecutive year of Camry being the countrys best-selling mid-size car.
In addition to Corolla and HiLux 4x2 and 4x4, Camry continued its dominance of the field in the mid-size car market while the LandCruiser 200 SUV, HiAce van and HiAce bus also led home the rivals in their individual market segments.
