Toyota Australia announces recall of First Generation Prius Vehicles
May 31, 2011 By Toyota Australia.
Toyota Australia has initiated a vehicle safety recall on first generation
Prius vehicles produced from August 2001 to May 2003 as part of a global recall.
A total of 493 Toyota first generation Prius vehicles are involved in Australia.
Condition:
If the vehicle's steering wheel is frequently turned to the full-lock position with high force, there is the possibility that the nuts that secure the input shaft in the steering assembly may become loose. If this occurs, the electric power steering may become less effective, leading to heavy steering or temporarily limited steering.
Situation:
There have been no cases of the condition reported in Australia for Toyota first generation Prius vehicles. There have been no accidents or injuries associated with this condition.
Next steps:
Toyota Australia will contact affected first generation Prius owners by mail in June, advising them to make an appointment with their preferred Toyota Dealer. This recall activity will be conducted free of charge.
This safety recall is a preventative action. Customers can continue to drive their vehicles, but if they experience the condition they should immediately contact their preferred Toyota Dealer to make an appointment.
