Toyota Sells Two-millionth Prius
Oct 7, 2010 By Toyota Australia.
Toyota's
Prius is the world's best-selling hybrid vehicle - and now it's set a new milestone.
Global sales of the petrol-electric fuel miser have just passed two million - and the popularity of Prius is gaining pace.
While it took more than 10 years for Prius to reach the magic first million, it's taken less than a quarter of that time to post the second million - just two years and five months.
The total includes almost 940,000 deliveries in North America, more than 825,000 in Japan, 206,000 in Europe and 40,000 in the rest of the world.
Australians have bought more than 16,200 since Prius was launched in this country in October 2001.
Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in Japan believes Prius has cut carbon-dioxide emissions (considered a cause of global warming) by approximately 11 million tons*.
Prius uses 3.9 litres/100km** of regular unleaded fuel, based on the official combined cycle and emits less carbon dioxide than any other vehicle on the Australian market - just 89g/km.
Toyota's goal is to reach one-million hybrid sales per year during the 2010s and to adopt hybrid technologies in all model series as soon as feasible in the 2020s.
* The comparison is against petrol-powered vehicles in the same class and of similar size and driving performance. Calculation: Number of registered vehicles x distance travelled x actual fuel efficiency in each country x CO2 conversion factor. Source: TMC.
** Fuel consumption and emissions will vary depending on driving conditions/style, vehicle conditions and options/accessories. Source of fuel consumption and emissions data: ADR 81/02 combined cycle.
