Toyota Prius named green car for 2010
Toyota's Prius has been named the top green car for 2010 because of its fuel efficiency and high-tech features.
Importantly, the win is not simply because Toyota's petrol-electric hybrid technology makes it the most efficient and most powerful Prius yet.
Influential US automotive guide Kelley Blue Book says it was also looking for the safety, creature comforts and driving enjoyment that make a car pleasant to own.
Awarding Prius the number one spot in its Top 10 Green Cars list, the guide specifically mentioned advanced Prius features such as a glass moonroof with a solar-powered ventilation system, voice-activated navigation and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
The Blue Book says using less petrol doesn't just save the planet, it also saves money, especially with improving economic conditions likely to bring higher oil and fuel prices.
It says consumers can counter that problem and contribute to society by buying a fuel-efficient vehicle.
In Australia, Prius achieves fuel economy of 3.9 litres per 100km; it also produces just 89 grams/km of carbon dioxide, lower than any other car on the local market.*
Prius is the top-ranked car on the Federal Government's Green Vehicle Guide, achieving a maximum five stars.
* Fuel consumption and emissions will vary depending on driving conditions/style, vehicle conditions and options/accessories. Source of data: ADR 81/02 combined cycle.
