New Prius will be Australia's Greenest car
May 24, 2009 By Toyota Australia.
It's official. The new generation Prius will be Australia's greenest car when launched here in July.
Toyota Europe says the third-generation Prius emits 89 grams of CO[sub]2[/sub] per kilometre - a 14 per cent improvement over the previous model.
The only other petrol car under 100 g/km sold in Europe is another Toyota, the innovative four-seat iQ.
Fuel economy for Prius improves 10 per cent to just 3.9 litres of petrol per 100km (European combined cycle).
As well as lower emissions and fuel consumption, the new Prius has a bigger petrol engine, which helps boost power from the combined petrol-electric Hybrid Synergy Drive system by 20 per cent.
Toyota Australia is confident the Prius will have the lowest greenhouse and air pollution emissions of any car sold in Australia.
Boss Dave Buttner says none of the five-star performers in the Green Vehicle Guide are diesels, even when their fuel economy is relatively good.
The Guide says air pollution from diesels is generally higher than that of comparative petrol or LPG vehicles, especially particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions.
