Toyota Hybrids Selling at Record Pace
Mar 9, 2011 By Toyota Australia.
Toyota says consumers are buying its hybrid vehicles at the fastest rate ever - one every 47 seconds.
That's how often Toyota's hybrids have been driven out of dealer showrooms around the world in the past 18 months.
More than one million Toyota hybrids, including
Prius and
Hybrid Camry, have been sold in that time.
This brings cumulative sales of Toyota's global hybrids, dominated by Prius and Hybrid Camry, to more than three million.
Sales are gaining pace. It took Toyota almost a decade to sell the first one-million hybrids, while the second million took two years and three months.
The company calculates its hybrid vehicles have emitted approximately 18 million fewer tons of CO2 than petrol-powered cars of similar size and driving performance.
The total is based on the number of registered vehicles, distance travelled, fuel costs (actual fuel efficiency in each country) and a CO2 conversion factor.
Toyota plans to introduce ten new-model hybrid vehicles around the world by the end of 2012.
Australian motorists have bought more than 16,000 Prius hatches and more than 7,000 Hybrid Camry sedans.
