New Prius is Australia's Greenest Car
Sep 7, 2009 By Toyota Australia.
With the best combined greenhouse and air pollution rating of any vehicle sold in Australia, Prius is officially our greenest car.
Prius scored 17.5 out of 20 on the Federal Government's Green Vehicle Guide, 9.0 for greenhouse and 8.5 for air pollution.
It's the highest ranking vehicle on the Guide, and the lowest CO[sub]2[/sub] emitter.
Third-gen Prius puts out just 89 grams of CO[sub]2[/sub]per kilometre and uses less fuel than every other car on the market - just 3.9 litres per 100km*.
Prius is a full-size five-seat car powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor.
So there's really no excuse - you can drive an environmentally sound car without sacrificing space, comfort or performance.
New model Prius even has better performance thanks to the improved Hybrid Synergy Drive system.
This technology will be extended to the locally produced Hybrid Camry in early 2010.
It's interesting to note that none of the five-star performers in the Green Vehicle Guide are diesel vehicles, even where their fuel consumption is pretty good.
According to the Guide, that's because generally diesel vehicles have substantially higher air-pollution emissions than comparative petrol or LPG vehicles.
*Fuel consumption and emissions will vary depending on driving conditions/style, vehicle conditions and options/accessories. Source of fuel consumption data: ADR 81/02 combined cycle.
