Toyota passes Two Million Hybrid sales
Sep 3, 2009 By Toyota Australia.
Toyota has achieved a landmark for its hybrid technology, announcing it has sold two million ultra-fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles around the world.
The milestone was achieved late last month and comes hot on the heels of the Australian launch of the third-generation Prius, powered by Hybrid Synergy Drive (tm) .
Toyota calculates that its two million hybrids have cut carbon-dioxide emissions by 11 million tonnes compared with petrol-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance. The corporation sells 13 hybrid vehicle models in approximately 50 countries and regions around the world, including three commercial-vehicle models in Japan.
In Australia, customers are offered the Toyota Prius, Lexus GS450h, RX 450h and LS 600hL, and the Hino Hybrid truck.
From February next year, the Australian range will be extended with the launch of the Hybrid Camry - the first locally built hybrid car.
Toyota has positioned its response to environmental issues as a priority management issue, making a concerted effort to popularise hybrid systems.
It aims to sell one million hybrid vehicles per year globally as early as possible in the 2010s and introduce hybrid models in all vehicle series as early as possible in the 2020s.
